Fasting is worth our attention because we can nurture and improve our relationship with God Almighty through it. Ramadan is few periods of sleep away, and our brothers and sisters in Islam will perform fasting. This event has inspired me to write this blog. It’s about the Five Best Spiritual Fasting activities you can try as a beginner.
In Christianity, fasting is not usual practice. Few Christians practice fasting, and most of us were not educated or introduced to fasting. As you may be aware, fasting means denying yourself to intake food for some time. The idea is to limit your physical needs; instead, you focus more on your spiritual needs.
Fasting is also new to me. Ultimately, denying myself food intake is a considerable struggle, mainly because I take prescribed hormonal pills to manage my hormonal imbalance and adenomyosis. But, I committed to fast about four years back because I believe that this should be part of who we are as believers in the faith.
And I learned many ways to fast and deny myself of any physical needs, instead focus myself on thriving and learning more about God’s words. I’m happy to share them with you today.

#1. 30-days Offline from Social Media
When I first practiced this 30-days offline from social media, it was hard for the first 2-3 days because I suddenly changed my gadget routines. But, eventually, I get used to it. As soon as I wake up, instead of checking any of my social media accounts, I go online and read one or two chapters of a book I chose from an online Bible site.
I noticed that I got calmer throughout the day, and I became more mindful of what I say or act towards others. The most best part is, I no longer worry about my social media accounts! Most of us today, especially teenagers and young adults, are so hook up with social media. Such an attitude made us more unrealistic.
It’s best for us to plan and take some time to focus on our spirituality. Engage ourselves in healthier activities online, and use our gadgets in praising and pleasing our God.
Acts 17:27 – That they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel their way toward Him and find Him. Yet, He is actually not far from each one of us.
#2. 30-days No Night-life or Party
Well, at this point, I no longer much into night-life, partying or clubbing. But, if you are one of those who love such activities and want to push yourself to improve your spirituality, this is the best fasting for you!
Night-life, clubbing, and partying are, without doubt, worldly activities. Refraining yourself to engage with such events is a tremendous step forward in pleasing our God. Instead, we can attend to groups or communities that perform Bible studies or hear sermons and attend services about God.
Romans 12:2 – Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
#3. 30-days No Alcohol
Stopping from our vices such as alcohol, gambling, cigarettes, etc., are some of the best fastings I can recommend. First of all, it will help you clean both physical and spiritual bodies. I know it can be challenging, especially if you are into drinking or cigarettes but imagine yourself being clean, body and soul, preparing yourself and committing yourself to improve in the glory of our God Almighty?
Ephesians 5:18 – And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.
1 Corinthians 10:13 – No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation, He will also provide the way of escape that you may be able to endure it.
#4. 30-days No Sexy or Provocative Dresses
Okay, this is not only for women but men too! Let’s be honest. We love to dress up to feel confident, beautiful, and to attract. I have seen men and women dress up inappropriately. I mean, wearing provocative clothes and disturbing human eyes. If you are one of those, then this is the best fasting I can recommend. Remember, fasting means thriving to fight our lower selves to glorify our God and improve ourselves.
1 John 2:15-17 – Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
#5. 30-days No Meat Diet
I think this is one of the easiest on the list, except if you’re a meat-lover. I haven’t done this yet, but I’m planning to practice it this coming Ramadan plus the 30-day off social media. The point is, we can start small when fasting. God doesn’t require us to do things that are too much on our plate. What He needs us is to be faithful to Him and ourselves. He loves it when we thrive on being better and walking to His path.
Psalm 1:1-3 – Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law, he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
While on fasting, here are the activities which you can do to boost your spirituality.
