Capital punishment, or better known for death penalty, is a government-sanctioned practice whereby a person is killed by the state as a penalty for a crime. Punishable by death are hideous crimes such as murder, mass murder, aggravated cases of rape, child rape, child sexual abuse, terrorism, treason, espionage, piracy, aircraft hijacking, drug trafficking and drug dealing. Others consider serious offences such as offences against the State, attempting to overthrow government, war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide, the most serious acts of recidivism, aggravated robbery, and kidnapping.
There is a great debate in all nations including our country the Philippines. What should be our stand? Questions like ‘Is the death penalty effective?’ ‘What is the problem with the death penalty?’ ‘Does death penalty reduce crime rate?’ ‘How many innocent people have been executed?’ ‘Does the death penalty violate human rights?’ And many more.
Here’s what I stand for, every human has the right to live.
Everyone in this world has the right to enjoy the life he chooses. Everyone has the right to strive for his betterment and achieve his aspirations. We are all given a freewill to do what is best for us and for our love ones. And no one has the right to stop or take this from us.
I also believe that with these given freewill and rights, we are bound to a bigger accountability and responsibility as humans. This means, we must take care of everyone and everything that surrounds us. We must stop our desires which will lead to a repugnant result. It is our own liability if we push ourselves into something that will lead us to an undesirable situation – death.
Religiously speaking, we are not permitted to kill anybody for whatever reason, and we are advice to forgive “seventy times seven times” (Matthew 18:22). Apparently, this expression is a figurative for infinity; we are called to forgive an infinite number of times the way our Creator forgives us!
On the other hand, we are bound to obey and respect our governing officials – “Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work” (Titus 3:1); “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.” (Romans 13:1).
Accordingly, I am calling the authorities and officials to be more humane in making critical decisions when dealing with this life-threatening issue – death penalty.
Yes, there are already countries who do capital punishment and our hope is that, you are accountable enough to execute this capital punishment for those who genuinely deserve what you think they deserve. And for my own country; I will support the decision made by our authorities and officials in the future. I hope and pray that whatever the result is will help our country and our society to live rightfully in the forthcoming.
